    Comment:
"As a child, when the spot appeared on my forehead, it looked like a burn, or some kind of skin disease. I was taken to a dermatologist who gave me steroids (this was in 1955 or 56); and something else (i don't know what) to darken my skin! (I am African American). Then they gave up and told my mother to put "Crisco" on the mark."

What type (types) of procedure was used? (Responding = 28)

1: Collagen implant through small incision behind ear 2: Silicone implant through same incision and also through small incision under chin 3: Removal 4: Tissue transplant from my lower abdomen. Artificial bone & fat implant
Fat graph, Flap and remove excess (See Comment 1 below) Fat graph
Fat graphs Fat implantations two times & allograph transplantation, silicone injections from 7 to 17
Fat injection Fat injections (2 responses)
Fat injections from abdomen to cheek Free flap to chin & cheek, artificial material to forehead & temple, liposuction & fat injections
Implant in upper cheek bone (left side) & fat graph from stomach area in lower cheek area Injected silicone into forehead in 1972

(See Comment 3 below) Silicone injections, surgery to drain the Silicone (See Comment 4 below)
Skin flaps, grafts, laser Straighten nose & jaw, microvascular free flap
The first was a microvascular free flap. The second was a correction of the shape of the flap. The third was Medipore on the bone under the eye. Then about five were injections of fat in the lip and the cheek. Type cartilage implant (nasal septum harvested & implanted in lower eyelid)
    Type insertion of fat

    Comments:

    1.  The first surgery was a fat graft (buttocks to cheek), the 2nd surgery was a 'flap' - a bit of flesh with it's own blood supply was taken from my groin and transplanted into my cheek and chin and top lip. The 3rd surgery was to remove a bit of the excess.

    2.  Implanted plastic onto the cheek bone and chin area, also filled in with a lipo (fat), the lipo reabsorbed and a second surgery was performed to redo the implant and add more lipo to the cheek, that became infected and the lipo came out again. The third surgery was a nightmare, they took the graft from my upper thigh (underwear line) and placed it in the cheek in layers, again after a week this too became infected and I spent 10 days in the hospital and had a post op infection surgery to try to retain the graft, it worked, although the graft fell into the cheek and didn't stay where they wanted it, it still stayed, but I see it reabsorbing.

    3.  Which did not stay in the areas but moved to healthy undamaged more pliable areas thus causing bad 'puffiness'.

    4.  First surgery the doctor took a fat graft from my buttocks and placed it in my cheek as well as filled in my lip (very painful healing process). For the second surgery, the doctor liposuctioned fat from my stomach and injected it into the affected cheek area in a horizontal and vertical pattern to rebuild the area. Also had an implant put into my left lip to make it less droopy. (The area that was liposuctioned hurt more during the healing process than my face).

At what age (ages) was surgery (surgeries) performed? (Responding = 29)

    7, 9, 19 10 10 to 20 11 to 12 12 & 21

Other responses to "Was surgery a success?":
1st absorbed, 2nd rejected & went septic, last was a moderate success. 1st not a success, 2nd was an improvement.
    50% successful 70%
Fixed one problem but caused another problem. Somewhat; still need ointment & plastic wrap taped over eye at night; some cosmetic benefit. Can't look down any longer because lid obstructs view.
Sort of Sort of - not perfect but I think I look better than I would if I hadn't had it.
Sort of, not happy with it The first surgery was completely reabsorbed. As for the second one, I was supposed to have a follow up procedure 2 months later but I was pregnant with my first child and I haven't gone back.
The implant is fine. The fat has reabsorbed. Yes & No (See Comment 2 below)
Yes, but have since atrophied. Yes, I never had complications. The fat injected remained only in small part but I knew before undergoing the surgery. Anyway, the asymmetry is still visible.

    Comments:

    1.  Comment from a "No" response: Neither injections nor draining were successful.

"Applying make up and styling hair major self-esteem issues."
"I am a waitress and constantly in the public eye. Mean comments hurt but you must remember they are made out of ignorance or fear of the unknown."
    "We all do though."

"Not so far." ("difficulty with job opportunities")

    Concerning "Negative experiences":
The "Plastic Surgeon who first diagnosed me, when I said I suppose a lot of people just ignore it, he said, they just hide out in their houses and that I wouldn't want to pursue a career in public relations (a large part of my job at the time). I cried all the way home."

"Yes, people staring, strangers asking 'what happened to your face'."

  35. Other:
Gets sick of being asked what kind of accident I had, or who has been hitting me It is frustrating and isolating, even under the best of circumstances (I feel like I have been fortunate in so many ways, and yet at times I feel the tremendous isolation of being part of something so odd and so very rare.
My father committed suicide when I was 11. My mother has attempted more than once. This is part of my problem with depression. Teasing from other kids
  36. Additional comments:
"Although this was an in-depth survey, I don't think it covers as much as Dr. Stone's. Yes, I realize it's just a small version, just misses some questions that I think are important....just a couple of 'em...
    * Are any other family members affected?
    * Pregnancy(ies) results (difficult - easy)"
"As a person with Romberg's and as a medical professional, I'll be very interested in the outcome of this survey. Good luck!"

"Dad had Parkinson's Disease, I had tick bite prior to PRS onset - doctors say it's not related but I wonder."

My son "seems to have a hearing loss.. taking to doctor to have that checked.. School work .. he seems to be slower than other students.. he does not stay focused, often goes blank and has a hard time remembering things…"

A Doctor from the "Cleveland Clinic was treating until recent retirement, will be going to replacement pediatric rheumatologist in April."

"I am curious to see the results of this survey. This is the first time I have ever participated in something so personal and revealing. I hope we can all gain valuable information from all of our shared experiences. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy lives to conduct and participate in this survey."

"I had silicone injections in right cheek and chin in 1974. The silicone has stayed in place, and has not given me any trouble. At age 30 I began to have eyesight problems, on the side of the atrophy. At age 44, I started having Grand Mal seizures in my sleep."

"I haven't followed thru with medical care to the extent which I should have, I'm sure that there is much more damage than I'm aware of. Example, my skull changes continuously, my eye is getting more and more receded, and is always bloodshot and dry."

"I'm so happy that I found you."

"My daughter is 6, and aside from the physical signs of Romberg's, we have not noticed her to be in any pain or discomfort as of yet. I hope this is a good sign."

"One of importance matters is depression from our appearance. Since Rombergs make people nervous, he or she is not easy to maintain relationship with other people.(Everybody look my face!!) But doctors I met said that they don't know the cause of Rombergs. I think the cause of Rombergs is stress. I'm a Korean. In my country, there are few person who was diagnosed Rombergs. I think regional factors affect this disease."

"Rombergs is something I have been living with for over 47 years - you learn how to adjust and accept. There is no cure and apparently they haven't even found the cause. I have been told by doctors, that it could be caused from either severe emotional or physical trauma. Mine seemed to reactivate during difficult periods of my life and seemed connected to an inflammation somewhere in my body."

"Thank you for taking the time to do this for all of us."

"Thank you so much for this outlet, it's not just a face problem, there are a lot of other aspects to this disease."

"Thanks for all the time you are contributing to this!"

"Two children not affected as far as I know."

"While I don't feel that I have a psychological disorder, I do feel that my self esteem has been affected by the condition over the years. I use my hair to cover the affected side and find myself subconsciously adjusting my hair when meeting new people. I feel that since my operation, this has improved and my confidence has improved. I will probably consider another procedure at some time as the fat injections really need a few repeats to get the desired effect."

"You are saints to do this! THANK YOU!!!"
